I received an email from Mitch Hughey, who works for the Mississippi
Industries for the Developmentally Disabled. He is trying to get the
word out about a wonderful program where he works. Since it is a great
program, and golf-related, I agreed to put it in the newsletter. This
were also mentioned in the September 2000 issue of Golf Digest.
Stick a tee in the ground and there's a chance you have made at least
one person's day. We are talking about the people at Ellisville State
School in Ellisville, Mississippi. Since 1993 the client's and staff
at Ellisville State School have bagged and shipped more than 32 million
tees to golf clubs across the country.
Part of the Mississippi Industries for the Developmentally Disabled
(M.I.D.D.), the golf tee program now employs 75 people with mental and
or physical disabilities. The wooden 2 1/8 inch "pro-slim tees" - the
same used on the PGA Tour, are packed in bags of 6, 12, 15 and 25 tees.
It is a win-win situation for the clients at Ellisville State School
and golf clubs all over the country. The clients build self-esteem through
employment, and golf courses get quality tees at real competitive prices.
The only problem is there are enough people to fill 100 more jobs.
The solution: Play more golf so Ellisville State School can buy more
tees for the clients to bag.
