* Article "2002 PGA Show"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The
49th Annual PGA Merchandise Show was, as usual, huge and extravagant,
and always a pleasure to attend. This year I focused on a few specific
areas, rather than try to take the whole thing in. I plan on writing
an article for the March or April issue concerning the various point-of-sale
and online tee time vendors. I've received a lot of emails asking for
advice, and I plan on providing it. To participate, read the paragraph
at the end of this article.
For
this issue, I plan on focusing on the more interesting new products
that debuted. Of course, every club manufacturer had something new in
their booths, but the more interesting items were:
Nike,
with the debut of their forged irons for the better player, and their
titanium drivers, coming in 275cc and 360cc were a hit. These are going
to be quite popular. That alone would've drawn a lot of traffic to Nike's
booth, but they also had the replicas of Tiger's four major championship
trophies on display.
Callaway
introduced the C4, which stands for "Compression Cured Carbon Composite".
The club head is 360cc (the largest in Callaway's history), while their
other new driver, the Big Bertha Steelhead III, is 225cc.
Wilson
also introduced their biggest driver ever, with the Deep Red driver
being 365cc in size.
They also debuted a line of Deep Red fairway woods.
Obviously,
this year the major manufacturers feel that bigger is better. Another
trend worth noting was the line of price-conscious items appearing at
a variety of booths. A lot of ball manufacturers have introduced lines
that are in the $20 - $35 range per dozen (thankfully). Titleist introduced
the NXT line, Top Flite the XL3000 line, and the Maxfli Noodle, with
its catchy name and patriotic packaging all fit into this mid-price
range.
Putters
are always a hot item, and this year was no different. The one getting
the most attention was the Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Putter. It is a
mallet, with two golf ball-like alignment aids directly behind the center
of the putter face. Supposedly, when a golfer lines up a putt, these
aids will make it easier visually. It truly is an interesting looking
putter, and I believe it will be very popular.
Louisville
Golf unveiled the new True Center putter line, which uses a Persimmon
wood insert.
The insert is stained mahogany and applied by hand to each True Center
putter face. I've always been a fan of Louisville's products, and the
feel this putter provides is impressive.
Wilson
also introduced a line of four new putters, the Deep Red Fluid Feel
putters. They each
have a variable face insert, which is supposed to help with distance
control.
The
big wedge story this year was Dave Pelz, short game guru, teaming up
with Orlimar, and
introducing the Dave Pelz Distance Control wedges. The four club set
consists of a pitching wedge, sand wedge, loft wedge, and extra loft
wedge.
One
of the new additions this year was the New Product Center, where you
could stop and see all the items debuting at this years show in one
place. There were over 100 new items, with some of the more interesting
being:
EGolfTrends,
which produces the PowerKaddie, a battery powered ratchet for spikes.
Invisible
Club Guard, which is a see-through wrap used to put on the top of a
club, so a member can take a club for a test round, and not have to
worry about scratching it.
One
Page Book Company, which produces a beautiful, readable, version of
the rules of golf suitable for framing and hanging on the wall.
The
media members voted on what they thought was the best new product, and
it goes to New License's Fortune Tee, which, when broken, reveals a
small piece of paper that may have a winning item on it (not unlike
a fortune cookie).
The
International Network of Golf (ING) presented their Industry Honors,
which recognizes outstanding achievement in 12 categories. Some of the
winners included:
Television
Ad: FootJoy, "Sign Boy and Tim"
Television Ad Series: PGA Tour, "These Guys Are Good"
Product Ingenuity, Emerging Companies: Ahead Headgear
Product Ingenuity, Market Leaders: Titleist Pro V1
I
didn't have much time to spend in the apparel section, but I did get
a chance to visit Ahead's booth on Sunday afternoon, where they were
providing hats with custom embroidery on the back. They also had TV's
set up, and, as I waited for my hat, I took a break and watched some
of the playoff game between New England and Pittsburgh. When the Patriots
scored, the booth erupted with screams and cheers, and high-fives all
around (Ahead is based in New England). It was a great way to end the
2002 PGA Show.
