The National Golf Course Owners Association has introduced a new resource for members and non-members interested in purchasing or selling a golf course called The Golf Course Market. The Golf Course Market includes a website (http://www.golfcoursemarket.com) and a new section of Golf Business magazine and is an open marketplace for buyers, sellers and anyone else involved in the real-estate transaction process.

Matrix Golf announces the Matrix SSTM, a scoring system that allows golfers at different locations to compete against each other by adjusting factors for course difficulty, conditions and weather. The system is well suited to corporations and associations wishing to hold tournaments in locations nationwide. For more info, visit: http://www.matrixgolf.com/

* The Big 6 with... Ahead
------------------------------------------------------------

1. Who - Who are you?

Ahead, located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is a designer and marketer of branded golf headwear. CEO Ken Shwartz founded Ahead with a simple objective-make golfers, club professionals and retailers happy by revamping the moribund headwear category, and in the process, shake up the golf industry with a new vitality and desire to break from the past. The Ahead brainstorm came to Shwartz during a hiatus from his previous experience in headwear as a 12-year veteran with Universal Industries. Shwartz used his new-found free time to take up golf; he couldn't resist scrutinizing the pro shops-especially the cap displays-at every course he played. Shwartz quickly realized that there was precious little difference in golf headwear from shop to shop. The caps offered the standard logo of the course or club in a few primary color offerings, but nothing more exciting than that. He formulated a strategy steeped in the belief that golf headwear needed to be more creative, focusing on adding never-before-seen graphics and more appealing colors.

2. What - What product/service do you provide to the golf community?

Headwear/Personalized Headwear! Additionally, Ahead has recently expanded its product offerings to include Ahead Authentics, its inaugural apparel line, the Kate Lord Collection, a fashionable women's line of straw hats and visors, and a "Heavy Metal" line of golf accessories. Furthermore, Ahead heads into the holiday season by unveiling the perfect gift for your favorite golfer, the "Ahead Gift Box Set," which features an array of customized and personalized Ahead products. The foundation of the company is still Headwear, and Ahead's ability to personalize headwear with the Aheaderizer- a computerized stitching machine. The Aheaderizer, launched in December 2001, is presently featured in more than 1000 golf shops. In addition to providing golfers with a personalized experience, the Aheaderizer provides golf pros with an additional revenue stream and an opportunity to provide a fun vehicle for their customers. Headwear sales have increased by an average of 30 percent at the golf shops that are equipped with the machine.

The Ahead gift boxes range from $20 (SRP) packages (cap with logo, ball-marker, divot-repair tool, customized gift box) to $75 (SRP) packages (Personalized Ahead Authentics garment, Personalized ball-marker cap, ball-marker, engraved divot repair tool, engraved bag tag, ball-marker keyholder and customized gift box.) Each Ahead Gift Box can be customized and personalized to meet the needs of every golfer-from the merchandise included in the set to the personalization of the cap, apparel, and even the gift box itself!

3. How - How does Ahead work?

Ahead revolutionized the Headwear Industry with their creativity and innovative graphics and designs. Furthermore, they have established a new industry trend that focuses on personalization and customization. GolfWorld Business continues to praise Ahead, featuring the company in the "What's Hot" section, as the leader in the industry.

Additionally, Ahead makes life much easier for buyers by providing their own displays. All products under the Ahead umbrella can be complemented with handcrafted wood fixtures, POP pedestals, signs and mirrors that are designed and
sculpted at Ahead's on-site woodshop. The fixtures and POP pedestals provide appealing displays made specifically for the Ahead product line.

4. Where - Where do you sell Ahead products?

Green-grass shops, off course retail locations, resorts

5. When - When did you begin, and how long have you been in business?

The company was founded in 1995, with the first office located in the basement of the Shwartz residence, with five employees. Today, Ahead's headquarters is in a 100,000 square foot facility located in New Bedford, Mass with more than 300 full-time employees.

6. Why - Why should someone purchase Ahead products instead of the competition?

Ahead has established itself as an industry leader. The company has revolutionized the headwear industry and is providing golf professionals with additional revenue streams through their customization and personalization options. They also continue to provide golfers with unmatched quality headwear, and now apparel as well. Ahead offers great margins for golf pros, and with the addition of the customization and personalization options, the revenue streams are even greater. The Aheaderizer has been referred to as a "$10 printer" by many golf professionals.

* Knowing The Rules
------------------------------------------------------------

My Rules discussion for December occurred in a MN Senior Amateur, August 2002:

Your drive went astray on #8 at Stonebrooke Golf Club (Shakopee, MN)** -- the short, uphill par 4 (forward tees are 195 yards); astray and left toward the OB stakes. However, you've found your ball, not affected by the OB stakes, but quite affected by the tree line and underbrush. You've a difficult shot and a remote chance of successfully getting back into the fairway. What do you do?

You may declare your ball unplayable. When you have an unplayable ball situation, there are three options for relief. Each option has an associated one stroke penalty; and they are as follows:

1. Return to the spot as near as possible from which you last hit. (Since you would be returning to the tee, you may re-tee.)
2. Line up the point where the ball currently rests with the hole and back up on that line as far as you'd like. (In this particular scenario, #2 is probably not a viable option given the tree line, underbrush, and eventual OB stakes.)
3. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the unplayable ball, no nearer the hole. (When using this option, measure two club-lengths from the ball, NOT the condition [the tree line] which renders the ball unplayable. Then drop the ball, from shoulder height. The ball must hit a part of the course within the two club-lengths, no closer to the hole, but thereafter may roll up to two club-lengths, no closer to the hole.)

Note: None of these options include bringing the ball back in-the-line-of-flight. Line-of-flight is a misnomer and is not found anywhere within the Rules of Golf.

**The regular and championship tees for #8 (355 - 405 yards) give the player a 150 - 200 yard carry across a lake with a pontoon ride necessary to complete the hole.
