Reed Exhibitions added a number of new and interesting events this year, the most popular being the Demo Day on Wednesday. Two thousand invitations were sent out, but there were an estimated 2,500 - 3,000 in attendance. Everyone I spoke with had something positive to say about it. It finally gave buyers a chance to "try before they buy", and they did just that, in droves. I can't imagine another PGA Show without it. There were also educational seminars offered, covering such topics as Fashion Trends, Liquidating Inventory, and Building a Winning Retail Team. The New Product Center was moved into the exhibition area, and was a great place to view some interesting and not-so interesting products. Amstel Light sponsored the 19th Hole, which included a beer garden, charity auction, hitting area, and even a golf cart obstacle course. As for the show itself, I was very impressed with a number of new products. OGIO has a new line of bags, led by the EXO. The carry bag is lightweight, comes in 6 outstanding colors, and has an ingenious system for club placement called the Woode CMS (Club Management System). For more info, visit http://www.ogio.com/ Pixl Golf, whose wedges and putters have received some of the biggest awards in the industry, introduced a line of irons called the S4. With over 200 hexagonal pixels per club, the S4 cavity-back irons are a big step forward in iron technology. The pixels themselves are made of titanium (previously, they were made of stainless steel), which makes the face area lighter, and adds to the durability of the club. For more information, visit http://www.pixlgolf.com/ De La Cruz Golf, founded by legendary clubmaker Dick De La Cruz, debuted a new line of putters and wedges. The CP (Center of Percussion) putter is the first 100% milled titanium putter, with a Wolfram 90 (tungsten alloy) insert. As would be expected from Mr. De La Cruz, it is a work of art. Also, the Bolero putter is made of stainless steel, with Wolfram 90 counterweights to aid in balance. The four new wedges come in 50, 54, 56 and 60 degree lofts. Visit http://www.delacruzgolf.net/ Louisville Golf, the only real "wood" company at this years show, debuted the Smart F2 "Fairway Finder" driver. A brass rudder is fitted on the back of the soleplate, which lowers the center of gravity. Add that to 12.5 degrees of loft, and a standard shaft that is an inch shorter than most, the club is designed to have you finding the fairway more often. If you haven't hit a persimmon club in a long time, they are also offering a money-back guarantee on their Niblick line of fairway woods. For more, visit http://www.louisvillegolf.com/ Ben Hogan Golf announced an alliance with Bettinardi Golf to produce new putters under the name "Ben Hogan by Bettinardi" putters. Bettinardi will initially manufacture four new putters exclusively for Ben Hogan. For more info, http://www.benhogan.com/ SkyGolf GPS has come out with a new, stand-alone GPS receiver called the SG2. It is easily the smallest, most ergonomic GPS I've ever seen. The benefits are many: 10-hour battery life, bulletproof, works out of the box, smaller than most cell phones, large number readout (for those with poor eyesight), 8,000 courses online by the end of the year, and the biggest benefit: No cost whatsoever to the golf course. To learn more, visit http://www.skygolfgps.com/ The most interesting new club at the show had to be the MAC (Magnitude Amplification Cavity) by Burrows Golf. This is definitely a new direction in club design. The Powersphere in the bottom of the club not only amplifies the power into the ball, but also releases unwanted vibration outward, not up the shaft. To see it for yourself, visit http://www.burrowsgolf.com/ Although there were noticeably fewer people walking the aisles, and fewer exhibiting, the PGA Show is still a pleasure to attend. I hope they continue to try new things (Demo Day, education conferences, etc.), and listen to what the exhibitors and media are suggesting. The industry still needs a show like this, and I hope it's around for another 50 years.
