Reprinted with permission from Golf Tournament Planning Want to set your event apart from all others being operated and promoted in your community? Consider a Golf Skills Challenge Event as a primary event. Approximately 100 volunteers are needed for the day of the event so it is very important to implement your nine month tournament time line guide. Don't have a time line guide? Visit www.golftp.com for more details. The Golf Skills Challenge This event tests players' abilities in golf's eight major fundamentals (chip shot, greenside bunker, long drive, middle iron tee shot, pitch over a hazard, putting, short iron, and trouble shot). The challenge is played on nine holes. Each player gets three shots per skill. The best score of the three shots counts toward the overall total. Players are grouped in divisions. Players register by filling out an entry form and paying a registration fee (typically $20-$30). Tee times accommodate up to eight players and are scheduled in twelve minute intervals from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It takes approximately two hours to complete the 8-skill circuit. Scoring targets are painted on each green, with points being awarded from 1-6. Mulligans (three extra swings) can be purchased prior to the round and can be used at any point during the competition. This type of golf challenge may be set up and staffed by the charity, or you may wish to use your own volunteers. Charitiy volunteers can be used to monitor the holes in exchange for a donatation to their organization. The amount of money donated to charities can easlily reach $3,500-$4,500 per weekend challenge.
