Recreational Golf Book Is Finalist For Ben Franklin Award

Ashland, Oregon - Madrone Press LLC is pleased to announce that Golf for the Fun of It: Enjoy Your Game No Matter What the Score by Michael Holstein and Scott English has been nominated as a finalist for the 2002 Benjamin Franklin Award in the Recreation/Sports book category.

Golf for the Fun of It celebrates the recreational pleasures of the game. Rowse Reviews calls it “a visually stunning book . . . a joy to read . . . one of the great books on golf.” This colorful, practical handbook illustrates all the ways to have fun playing golf. Packed with practical tips, beautiful photos and illustrations, humor, interviews, and anecdotes, it encourages golfers of all abilities to better enjoy the game they play.

Holstein teaches at Southern Oregon University. “For the last decade, the growth of golf has been flat. Why? It’s perceived as too expensive, too competitive, too exclusive, too hard to get good at. We show golfers, whatever their size, shape, age, sex, color, or ability that golf is a game first and foremost meant to be enjoyed. Lots of golf books talk about stance, swing, grip and improving your technique. We wrote a book about recreational golf and all the pleasures of the game, only one of which is a low score.” He adds, “We’ve written the people’s book of golf for the 90% of all golfers who shoot around 100 every time they play.

Co-author Scott English is a biologist and habitat restoration specialist. “I wanted to show people how to appreciate the flowers, plants, birds, and animals as they play. Golf can be a nature walk.” English also designs and constructs golf course wetlands and waterways. “Golfers will benefit from knowing how a golf course is designed from the ground up so they can understand and enjoy each hole as they play it.”

The Benjamin Franklin Awards celebrate excellence in editorial and design for titles published in 2001. Judges come from all areas of the publishing: non-competing publishers, artists, and writers who serve the industry. Awards will be presented on Wednesday, May 1st at the Grand Hyatt New York at which time winners will be recognized for setting the standards for the publishing industry.
