PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL (May 23, 2002) - With the help of a $50,000 grant
from Nike, TourTurf by Fieldturf has completed the installation of synthetic
turf tees and greens at the newly renovated First Tee of Metropolitan
New York. The dedication of the facility is scheduled for June 5th with
PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem slated to speak.
"We are proud to have been involved in this project and are excited to see it come to fruition", said John Daniel, President of TourTurf.
The search for a home for The First Tee in the New York metropolitan area took four years, but now children in the New York City area have a place they can now call home. Mosholu Golf Course and Driving Range, built in 1904 in The Bronx, is the permanent home of The First Tee. It is located in Van Cortland Park and is about a 35-minute subway ride from Grand Central Station. It was originally an 18-hole facility designed by John R. Van Kleek but is now a 9-hole course with a 300-yard, double-sided driving range designed by Stephen Kay. Renovation of the course was completed with the design assistance of Rees Jones.
"The MGA foundation and the Metropolitan PGA are excited about our new junior golf teaching facility, and are very proud of our partnership with The First Tee, a foundation whose mission is to impact the lives of young people through the positive values taught in the game of golf" said Jay Mottola, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Golf Association.
As part of the renovation of the facility, TourTurf constructed a 3,000 square foot putting green, a 2,500 square foot chipping green with sand trap and a teaching hole featuring a 3,000 square foot green. To enhance the practice experience for the First Tee participants, TourTurf constructed 3,375 square feet of synthetic tees on the practice range. The durability of TourTurf artificial grass combined with very little maintenance makes the surface ideal for a First Tee.

The First Tee was created for the purpose of providing affordable and accessible golf facilities to everyone, especially children up to 18 years of age, who have not had the exposure to the game and its positive values. The First Tee currently has over 130 facilities in development with 53 currently open.
