ORLANDO, Fla.
(Jan. 17, 2003) - The Alumni & Fans Golf Association announced
its newly-formed Collegiate Advisory Panel. The AFGA, a nationwide
membership organization, has as its goals to raise scholarship funds
for colleges and universities and to enhance the spirit and camaraderie
of collegiate fans across the U.S. through golf.
The AFGA Collegiate
Advisory Panel includes: Dr. P. Timothy Brown, head men's golf coach,
Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., member - Golf Coaches Association
of America Hall of Fame; Dr. Edwin Cottrell, retired college golf
coach, Pinehurst, N.C., Director of Education/NGF-Far East, member
- Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame; Jill Fjelstul,
head women's golf coach, U. of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla.; Doug
Gordin, head men's golf coach, Florida Southern College, Lakeland,
Fla., member - Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame; George
Jacobson, retired college golf coach, Beverly, Mass., Director - New
England Intercollegiate Golf Association, member - Golf Coaches Association
of America Hall of Fame; Vince Jarrett, head men's golf coach, Abilene
Christian U., Abilene, Texas; Rod Myers, head men's golf coach, Duke
U., Durham, N.C., USGA committeeman, member - Golf Coaches Association
Hall of Fame; and Skip Wagnon, athletic director, Central Oklahoma
State U., Edmond, Okla.
"The Alumni
& Fans Golf AssociationT will create camaraderie and competition
while contributing substantial scholarship funds to colleges and universities,"
said Tim Brown, chairman of the Collegiate Advisory Panel. "With
the support of golfers from coast to coast, the AFGA will serve to
enhance the educational experience for students from many walks of
life."
The Orlando,
Fla.-based AFGA will host The Alumni & Fans Golf Classic annually,
a nationwide amateur event in which AFGA members will compete in qualifying
events beginning in April around the U.S. in both gross and net divisions.
Golfers will name the college or university of their choice and play
in two-person teams for their schools, competing for the chance to
play in the national championship in Orlando, Fla., and for the chance
to provide scholarship funds in their names to their chosen schools.
To kick off its
inaugural season, the AFGA presented a check in the amount of $10,000
to the FedEx Orange Bowl Foundation at the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl
game, to be used for scholarship funds.
Charter membership
in the AFGA is free, and includes the right to compete in AFGA tournaments
and the chance to win a golf trip for four to Ireland. For further
